Football, like life itself, can be cruel & unfair. Just ask anyone, fan or neutral, about last night's performance by PSV Eindhoven against the much bigger AC Milan. The Italians had a 2-0 lead from the first leg of their semifinal clash against the Dutch Champions, but they were lucky not to have conceded a goal in their home ground. PSV put up a brave fight and should have had atleast a goal to show for all their effort. And last night in Holland, PSV outclassed AC 3-1 with 2 goals from the evergreen Philip Cocu, the second an absolutely superb volley as he was falling down. South Korean winger JS Park had previously open the scoring. But AC Milan went through to the final on the away goal rule (since the aggregate goal tally is 3-3, they win since they scored a goal away and PSV didn't) when Ambrosini scored late in the second half. That is where it is a shame, since PSV were the better team in the two legs and certainly played the better football among the 4 semifinalists.
On Tuesday night, 5 time European Champions Liverpool beat English League Champions Chelsea by a single controversial goal to go through 1-0 on aggregate. Despite Chelsea coach Jose Mourino's claim that the better team did not win, I'm guessing that most neutrals would disagree with him. Infact he has been critisized for saying so. Liverpool were tactically the better team in the two legs. But the fact is that they had to win on such a controversial goal is not what most purists would like. Replays showed that Luis Garcia's 4th minute flick did not completely cross the goal line, it was cleared by William Gallas.
Saw New Best Friend last night staring Mia Kirshner & Scott Baristow in a movie about rich college kids parties with drugs, alcohol & sex.
