A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Marc Savard was a standout with the Metcalfe Jets of the EOJBHL before moving up to the OHL's Oshawa Generals in 1993-94. He was claimed 91st overall by the New York Rangers in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft after leading the OHL in scoring with 139 points. An offensively gifted player, Savard impressed at training camp but was returned to Oshawa to further develop. In 1996-97 he won his second OHL scoring title with 130 points. The two-time OHL scoring champions Savard played 28 games for the Rangers in 1997-98 but saw most of his game action with the Hartford Wolfpack of the AHL. The next season he added a creative element to New York's line up with 36 assists in 70 games. In June, 1999 Savard was traded to the Flames in a deal involving several prospects and draft choices. Upon his arrival in Calgary, Savard had back-to-back 20-plus goal seasons and a career high 65 points in 2000-01. After an injury plagued 2001-02 season, and the acquisitions of Chris Drury and Stephane Yelle prior to the 2002-03 season, Savard was fighting for ice-time and was subsequently traded to the Atlanta Thrashers where he flourished with 47 points in only 57 games with the young Thrashers. Injuries limited the Ottawa, ON native to a mere 45 games in 2003-04, yet he managed to record 52 points (19-33-52).
