Derek Roy was born May 4, 1983 in Ottawa, Ontario. The second round, 32nd overall selection of the Buffalo Sabres in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Roy is a graduate of the OHL's Kitchener Rangers. An offensively gifted forward, Roy who is small in stature (5ft9 and 188lbs) in comparison to the average NHLer played four seasons with Kitchener registering 335 points (147-188-335). The OHL Rookie of The Year in 99-2000 and a member of the OHL and CHL All-Rookie Teams, Roy went on to lead Kitchener to the 2003 OHL Championship and the 2003 Memorial Cup title. After being named the Memorial Cup MVP, Roy made his professional debut with Buffalo's AHL affiliate in Rochester during the 2003-04 season. After collecting 26 points (10-16-26) in 26 games with the Amerks, Roy was recalled by the Sabres and went on to finish the season with the parent club, tallying 19 points (9-10-19) in 49 games. On the international stage, Roy was a member of Canada's Silver Medal World Junior Team in 2003.Roy's success continued as he moved on the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League the next season. He would only play 26 games with the Americans, as he played most of the season with the Sabres. Roy was back with the Americans for the 2004-05 season because of the 2004-05 NHL lockout, and he failed to make the Sabres out of training camp when NHL play resumed in 2005-06. However, he scored 20 points in 8 games with the Americans (including a few 5-point performances) and was called up to the Sabres and has not been sent back as of January 5, 2006. On Friday, March 3rd, Derek Roy recorded his first NHL hat trick against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was awarded first star of the game.
